Is Making Your Product Sexy Going to Increase Sales?

So what’s the deal with all the sexy advertising all about us each day these days? We see models on TV, and even hear their sexy voices on the radio attempting to convince us that we should buy their special brand of whatever. Is it really making people buy more products? Well I’m not too sure, but I can tell you how I think it helps.

At the end of the day it’s unlikely someone’s going to buy a product or service they have little need for. When you go to buy a car, you don’t actually get the cute chick that’s modeling on the bonet when you drive it home from the lot! I know many of you will be disappointed to hear this, but it’s true. I’ve asked!

Now, considering that you’ll see car magazines, men’s magazines, TV commercials for all sorts of things (life insurance, even women’s health products) that are made out to be sexy and sensuous, does the sexy model actually influence you to buy?

Well, in short, yes, and no. The model and the image of the ideal lifestyle (or body image etc) can influence you to pay attention to the commercial. I don’t know about you but the sight of a sexy bikini wearing model walking past me will always attract my attention! So, now that you’ve got my attention, what is the purpose of the commercial?

These sexy models are a great advertising tool, but for many of us males it’s just eye candy. I have no interest in buying many of the magazines related to care. I’m just not interested in cars enough to spend $10 on a magazine just so I can see some sexy pictures. That’s what the internet’s for right? (*ahem*)

The model may have gotten my attention, but it’s not making the sale. If you put a sexy model on a magazine about tropical fishing, or maybe about the latest Intel processor, I’d pay more attention. The model would get my attention, and the information about products I’m curious about would intice me to buy.

It’s rare that the advertising world does it wrong. Contrary to common belief, those advertising messages are annoying for a good reason (except for the sexy ones). They’re there for the exact reason the sexy models are on the front cover of the magazines. They’re there to interrupt your critical mind and get inside your head. They’re there to make you wonder if maybe you’re ready to buy this magazine and consider the offers inside.
